The death of meal delivery subscription services is grossly exaggerated. Despite struggles for Munchery, Blue Apron, Maple, and Sprig in the space, Michael Wystrach and Freshly are finding success in the meal kit space. Founded in 2012, Freshly offers ready-to-eat gourmet meals that are healthy, completely free of gluten and 85 other banned ingredients, and made with no artificial flavors, preservatives, and sweeteners.
Wystrach was inspired to start Freshly from his personal experience struggling to eat healthy while working long hours as a banker. He consulted with his cofounder's father, a physician and nutrition and wellness expert, to develop a meal plan for himself that he prepared at his family's restaurant. The concept took off with family and friends, cementing the Freshly concept.
With the Wystrach at the helm, the company has expanded rapidly going from covering 9 states to all of the continental United States from three different kitchens. The team has grown to support this growth and the company has now over 700 employees. Each week, the company serves over 600,000 meals to its growing customer base that are looking to have a quick, affordable, healthy and nutritious meal. While providing the convenience of a quick meal service has been the focus, Wystrach has also been able to reduce the food waste associated with the grocery model.
The company's impressive traction has not gone unnoticed. The startup has secured $107M in funding from both strategic and venture investors that include Nestle, White Star Capital, Insight Partners, and Highland Capital Partners. Earlier this year, Wystrach was able to attract May Gupta, a self-proclaimed marketing technologist, (Kimberly Clark and Spotify) as CMO. He was one of several key hires that also includes executives from Uber, Grey, Thinx, Buzzfeed, and Ollie to usher in the company's next phase of growth.
